Society values activity…….. but not results.

Everywhere you look people are busy! There’s not enough time in the day to get work done. Downsizing occurs and the people who are left must suddenly do the job of two people yet get paid the same as before. How stressful life is for all of us. If only things could be less chaotic.

Here’s a little secret most will deny.

I could fire three more people and give their work to you….. you would still have time to accept more .

You’re not really doing much in your eight hour day at work.

Go ahead and gasp in shock. Go visit another blog that tells you I’m wrong and you’re right. Or go check out your facebook page, or your personal emails, or go for a smoke break, or to the washroom for the 4th time in an hour, or post what an ass I am on twitter, or talk with a co worker about how off base I am. Those are the things most people do ….. during work hours.

If you’re still reading this I have a peace offering for you ……. It’s not your fault that you’re not doing much at work. You’re doing exactly what your bosses want you to do.

Sure they may say that’s not true, but take a look at their work. Do they show up for work before you? Do they go home after you do? Do they work through lunch….. or do they take an extra long lunch most days? What do they actually do? You know they have wasted more time than you, which gives you unspoken permission to mess around as well.

And they are doing exactly what their bosses want them to do also………

The work place values hustle and bustle. Earlier I said activity, but perhaps that was too kind a word.

Take this example,

You’re a manager and you walk down to the warehouse where you find your two employees playing a game of darts. When you walk in they look over at you and say hi……. Yet they keep playing darts. You ask them if they are on a break. They reply that they are not on a break.

You look over and see the third employee. She looks stressed out and is frantically running around attempting to get some products put onto a shelf. You ask her how things are going and she replies in a clipped tone that she is so busy. There are so many things to do and she just isn’t going to be able to get them done. Then she rushes behind a row of shelves and you can hear her noisily taking things off the shelf.

In the example , who gets in trouble? Who is the hardest worker? If someone is going to get a reprimand or fired….. who will it be? The two guys playing darts? Or the girl rushing around frantically?

You know the answer. We all do. That’s why everyone has “Too much work to possibly get done”

The owner of a shoe store would rather pay his employees to move a pile of shoes from one corner of the store and then back again, instead of paying them to stand comfortably doing nothing until a customer needs assistance.

A child who gets their work done early doesn’t get free time…… they get additional work.

Can we be surprised when the child doesn’t get their work done early? Or when an employee doesn’t get their work done leaving enough time to play darts?

The reward is more work…….so simple to fix. But things remain broken.
